We first met Gik & Guk (ages 8 and 10) when their father was collecting plastic and trash in front of the ILC. Just one simple question – “Where do your children go to school?” – started a new direction in both our lives.
Their father, and sole care giver, said his children hadn’t gone to school in two years because they relocated to Nong Khai and couldn’t afford the initial costs (books, uniforms, etc.) to get them back into school.
We told him that if he wanted his two daughters to go to school Isara would take care of everything. The next day he came back to Isara and we helped them get enrolled into a nearby school. We also went shopping for new uniforms and school supplies ($95).
The new school term was starting in one month so we decided to tutor Gik & Guk every day, to help them get up to speed with the rest of their class.
It has been a year since they enrolled into school and we’re proud to say that both Gik & Guk are in the top 10% of their class and have a lot of new friends. Their father is so happy that his children are back in school and he’s able to work during the day to help earn extra money for his family.
Another example of how important it is to get involved and help others.
