Kitkat, this is the place that serves Quiche Loraine. Yippee for the farangs!

Pk, they also have a page where they list local volunteer opportunities - perfect for the Isara Learning Center!

And for anyone who may ever get to visit Nong Khai, this is a very informational website with Visa information, a calendar of events, and it's own art gallery and music opportunities. Smiley

Thanks for posting that link, Ginafish.

I ran into the owner of Mut Mee's a few weeks ago (Jack, Melinda, and Jen stayed there) and spoke to him about his website and Isara. We thought we could do some cross promotion.

That's pretty cool that you posted the link without even knowing all that. Small world. Small Nong Khai. Grin

Thanks Ginafish it's a great website and describes the Nongkhai events very clearly. Cheesy  Hope we can eat there before I leave Nongkhai. Grin

The "Mut Mee" name is taken from the Thai silk products created in Thailand.
I've ordered lots of Mut Mee Silk Scarves to take back with me.  The patterns and colors are beautiful. Cheesy

Some how by jumping around links on their website, I came to a place where they sold silk shirts and thought about your shop, Kitkat. But I'm glad you are sticking with scarves. They'll be easier to take home and sell. Smiley Hope you get a high ROI! Grin

We stayed at Mut Mee for the first week I was in Nongkhai with Jack and Melinda.  The food there was a nice taste of home, I ate scrambled eggs, toast with jam, and coffee every morning! Yay for Mut Mee!
Here are a couple pictures I took there...

A guest was reading this post and I wanted to dredge it up for two things: Jen, have you missed food from home and gone by there to eat?
And thartley, you need to put this somewhere you'll remember for when you want quiche. Cheesy

No I haven't gone there to eat since I was a guest there 5 months ago!
I'm not sure if you can eat there if you aren't a guest.

I love Thai food though, I'm not hurtin' for eggs and bacon yet...

Mut Mee is a nice place to eat, a good ole taste of farang food.  I have always liked it there, and yes you can eat there if you arent a guest.  The owners are really nice and they can provide you with good info on the goings on around town and what to see and do.  I like their chicken steak specialty its really nice.  I ate there my second night in Nongkhai it was good

I have stayed at Mut Mee twice and will go back again. The setting overlooking the river is sublime. The food (farang and Thai) is without exception delicious. The restaurant on the boat is also very good though curiously seems often deserted. At the prow of the boat there is a little jazz bar which is VERY trendy and laid back. Mut Mee has another boat which goes for a little trip up and down the Mekong each night. There is also a bookshop worth visiting, and you can hire a bike to explore NongKhai. The only drawback is once you are esconced in a chair overlooking the river you might not want to move out!

How funny that Ian would post in this thread.  I was just up at MutMee this morning for breakfast (although it is very late morning).  I have been eating mostly curry and these really great cheese and tomato sandwiches that Dear makes up at OJ's, but I think I might have forgotten to eat lastnight.  I dont remember eating yesterday except for a small bag of lays chips and water when I was up at the ILC yesterday.  I was starving this morning and I KNOW my eyes and mind were bigger than my stomach when I was trying to decide what to have.

At MutMee, I ordered all of the following:
omlette with onion and tomato
bacon (I was scared, but went out on a limb since Sean eats it there)
fresh fruit plate of pineapple, banana, rambutan, and some other native fruit I don't know
glass of fresh orange juice
one heaven sent mug of very strong drip coffee

The only thing I managed to finish was the omlette.  Left half the bacon, at least half the fruit, half the juice and sadly, almost half the coffee.  But it was DELICIOUS!!!!!!  I wish I could get Laurie up and out of the room....she could have had a great breakfast with me, even if she just wanted what I didnt eat.

Now, I am waiting to see how my stomach reacts to this foreign matter called "FOOD"  haha!!   If it doesnt come from the 7-11, I'm not sure  my body will accept it. haha!!!!

 Cheesy

I was a bit scared about the bacon too, not least because it was called "home made" bacon. Can the next person who goes to Mut Mee ask what that means? Anyway it was OK.

The bacon is the best I've ever had.  You just have to order it "Sook Sook" or it is sometimes a little undercooked for my taste.  The bacon and scrambled eggs are excellent, tastes very organic and fresh. Grin

I am kind of stuck on Mut Mee's breakfasts.  For about $2.30 you can get a couple scrambled eggs, three pieces of bacon (very good, peppery seasoned taste and not too heavy on the salt), and a toasted baguette with butter and jam.  And for just a little more, I can get a cup of that delicious coffee.  I am beginning to think it isnt drip, but I dont care.  It tastes GREAT.  Usually, this is more than I can eat, but their fruit plates are fantastic.  it changes depending on what fruit they happen to have.  Last time I ordered one, it had mango, banana, pineapple, rambutan, and that unknown fruit.  So delicious, but they always bring enough for two people and I am usually alone.

I have to say, the food here, especially the fruit, is the best tasting food I have had.  None of the fruit here tastes like its U.S. counterpart.  The pineapples here taste way better than the ones back home and are soooo much less acidic.  Much sweeter here, too.  Mangos...don't even get me started.  The ones back home will never ever in a million years compare to the ones here.  And the bananas.  WOW.  Totally different taste here.

Another favorite dish at MutMee is a curry, potato peanut curry that you can have chicken added to.  Very delicious.

Now today, the weather here is perfect. Cool breeze, high of 82. I had a Sonic caramel Java chiller yesterday, and french fries.

This home made bacon, was it real pig bacon or a soya type substitute? What do they mean by home made? I don't believe they keep pigs and slaughter them just for the benefit of our breakfasts!  Wink

In fact that's exactly what they do do! I asked the great man Julian from MutMee about his bacon and this is what he said:

"The home made bacon is made in a friends home and is an entirely vegetable product.  That is, the pigs from which it is made, were exclusively fed on vegetable matter during their lives.  Moreover, they were taught Buddhism and their brothers and sisters were never fed to them."

I KNEW I felt enlightened when I ate there!

You might be interested in what Julian told me when I asked him the meaning of Mut Mee.

"Mut Mee is a kind of fabric woven in this part of Thailand.  The lady who started the guest house is a well known expert on Mut Mee and still to this day is a major exponent of textiles and weaving and currently advises the Government in this area.  She has done an enormous amount to help poorer women in Thailand.  It was she who originally came up with the idea for a guest house here in Nong Khai, and she sold it on to me in 1993.  Owing to here interest in weaving she called it the Mut Mee Guest House.  Her name is Nisachon Poonark and from time to time you see her name mentioned in the Bangkok Post or the Nation."

Tonight at the MutMee, Julian will be having a storytelling night on the floating bar, Gaia.  I saw a sign up near the kitchen about it, so I asked.  It only said that "tonight, Julian dishes all" kind of statement.  So I asked one of the girls who works there and she said that Julian would be telling stories and that he is an amazing storyteller.

I wonder what stories he will tell.  Its at 8:30pm.  I am thinking I might go.  Smiley
