Ubuntu

I recently tried out Ubuntu.  I was very impressed.  I am considering making the switch to linux when the newest version is released.

Anyone have any thoughts on Ubuntu?  Anyone currently using this operating system?

No kidding. But that is not what they are about. It is a free version of Linux created and supported by a community of volunteers.

PK uses Ubuntu for the isara search engine. I use RedHat at work, so I am not as familiar with Ubuntu.

I like Ubuntu, I think it is one of the most user friendly versions of linux.
My older brother uses it on one of his systems and you can ask him about it (send a PM for his e-mail address).
As far as the name goes, its a tribal word from south africa which translates so a meaning similar to "humanity", but

ZeroG - The Isara search engine "was" running on Debian. There was an incident a few days ago and we lost everything except the database. Which means the search engine no longer works, but we can rebuild it since the database is still intact.

Maybe we'll use Ubuntu the next time we build it.

Ubuntu is great. Your ability to use it is going to rely on what you want to use your computer for. Unfortunately, Linux does not support gaming as well as Windows. It can support most windows programs through WINE (free) or Cedaga (paid) however neither supports all programs and you will/may notice some slow down in large, graphically intense programs.

As far as Ubuntu as a Windows replacement, it can definitely do the job. There are some quarks and minor differences that can confuse a Windows native. Things like file system layout, moving icons, updating, and general computer "house keeping" are all very different from the OS we've all grown to know and hate.

It should also be noted that Ubuntu does not have great laptop support. They are working on it and it is getting better, but right now it's not great. Also wireless cards seem to give it problems.

The One really super awesome great thing about ubuntu is that unofficial tech support can be found for it. There a re a lot of users out there willing to share their experience and expertise on Ubuntu and help you get yours running the best it can.

TO be honest, the more I use Vista the more I consider using Ubuntu. As soon as I get a better understanding of WINE and can find the drivers for my realtek wireless card I will probably switch over. I lost my ability to play four-fifth of my games when I got Vista so it's not like I can lose much more there.  And Vista is interfering with my wireless ability anyway (which, from reports, seems to be normal for Vista) so maybe it's time to just take the plunge.

I use Kubuntu (the KDE variant of Ubuntu) on my Macbook and on a computer I custom built. I'd say the new version is worth getting, It's got some great hardware support and the community there is just outstanding if you need help with anything.

I think you should check out Ubuntu's main forks Kubuntu and Xubuntu and see if you like them. The desktop environment can really change your opinion of things. I personally use Kubuntu. KDE 4, though not so stable yet, cosmetically already blow my mind, I'm excited for it to be more widely adopted in the near future.

I'm glad to finally see Microsoft's monopoly over the computing industry getting chewed away. Plus a free alternative that can prove to be just as productive, if not more, to Windows and Apple should help even out the computer world.

If anyone would like, I could post some screenshots from both of my Kubuntu installs after school tomorrow. It's a little late now, and I have to wake up pretty early in the morning.

I'm glad to see more people finding Linux in general, it can really help the world out in the long term.

Hey everybody! I'm typing this on Isara's new Ubuntu Server located at the ILC. Fortunately the installation went smoothly. (Except for the usual stupid mistakes I make.)

We're currently transferring ACORN's database (Isara's search engine that's in development) over to the new server. Once that's in place we'll try to repair the damage that was done and get it back online soon.

So far Ubuntu is really cool.

Seriously try the Studio edition, you can find it in the universal repository. Have fun. I always enjoy my visits to Ubuntu land, it's a HUGE blast!
