While I've never been a fan of online conversion of anything, I do use a lot of PDF's

The best tool I've found for this is OpenOffice. It's an office suite along the lines of MS-Office, and hopefully will one day replace it entirely. With OpenOffice you can simply save your document as a PDF.

Unfortunately this means that you can not edit the PDF itself after it's creation, like you could with Adobe. However you can save your document as a doc file, change it when needed and then simply resave the pdf.

You can find OpenOffice at OpenOffice.org. This suite is open source and entirely free.

Open Office is the coolest thing ever. I'm amazed at how many people think they have to drop a couple hundred bucks just to get Word.

Yeah, just download a torrent. I don't do that.

The beauty of Open Office is that it's free and will allow you to open and save documents in just about any format (including Word and Works).

...and it is changing the shape of document formatting. the oxml and xml saving schemes are creating change in how documents are used, viewed, and manipulated.

Yeah, I've been thinking about uninstalling Microsoft Office and download OpenOffice.org or something. All I really need is a word processor and a PowerPoint viewer.

Microsoft Office 2003, the whole thing, is about 300MB or so. How much is OpenOffice.org?

Open office is free. And it's a complete office suite. The stand alone version (like for jump drives, zip drives) is about 35mb. Hubby uses OO and says he likes it.
