After some recent discussions on problems with contractors working on the ILC, it occurred to me that one of the classes for the ILC could be one on ethics in business. Looking into this closer, I found that Buddhism specifically addresses the problem of morals in the Pancha Shila. Of course this contract breaking may be something that only farangs experience, as it may not be a problem amoung the Thai people. I don't know.

The basic outline for the course could be:

Contracts and Agreements
   The need
   Types
   What is stated
   Stakeholders
   Who gets what

Contracts in the Business world
   Why they exist?
   Why honor them?
   What if: Business w/o contracts

Buddhist Morality - Shila (or sila) From: Perfect Society
   Lying
   Honesty and Integrity
Knowing when you are being dishonest
Kharma (the price you pay for dishonesty)
Contract breaking in the business world
"Bad Business Kharma is still Bad Kharma"

There are many branches of Bhuddism so I don't know exactly what applies in Thailand. Also, I only know what I have read in the last few hours at the bookstore and online, with nothing specifically about Thailand. So this is just a first stab at what could be a very good course for the Learning Center.

I welcome further discussion about this subject, as this is just a start. I'm sorry if this is all over the place, and if it looks like I have no clue. I think the Learning Center can teach a lot of non-standard business classes, free of the corruption, yet tailored to the needs and viewpoint of it's students.

I'm not sure how a course such as thins would go over being taught by farang.  If there was some sort of shared teaching between farang and say, a practicing buddhist, then I could see the potential benefit.

Pk could always sneak in a course in ethics while teaching English. Hehehe, get it.. sneak in ethics.. Hehehe...I crack myself up!

It would be a good idea for a class, but I think they should teach it in a basic way to younger kids. Pirated movies = bad kharma. Borrowing your friends cool Isara helmet without asking so you can go pick up food for the monks...murky ground. Wink
