Song Kran Helmet Donation '08

Tomorrow evening Isara will have it's 3rd Annual Song Kran Helmet donation ceremony in northeastern Thailand.

This year one hundred helmets will be donated and, like previous years, we'll once again invite the police to stop drivers who are not wearing helmets. But, instead of giving them tickets, we'll be giving the law breakers free helmets. We don't only want to reward bad behavior, so for those who are already wearing helmets we will be giving them coupons to a free dinner at a popular restaurant.

Everyone will be able to watch this event LIVE via Isara's webcam. That is, if you're able to wake up early enough to see it.

That was REALLY quick!

We're all sitting here in shock of what just happened. We thought a riot was going to break out at any moment. Fortunately there were about 12 policemen there to keep the peace. lol

Sean just said, "It took hours to prepare all those helmets and only 10 minutes to give them all away."

Thanks to everyone who woke up early enough to watch the event LIVE on the webcam. Hopefully you got some snapshots of it and will post them later.

We're going to go have a celebratory pizza now and cool down in the air conditioned restaurant. See you (online) in a while.

WOW!! This was AMAZING!! Great job everyone!  I saw PK, Ming, Sean, Terri and Laurie. WhoHoo! It was so exciting seeing it LIVE! It happened so fast!

I saw all the volunteers too! I didn't see 12 policemen though, only around 6 or 7. I did see Terri and Laurie across the street. I wanted to shout "Hey, move up here to the balcony! It's a great view of the crowd!"

Motorcycle deaths of course are mostly among young males. Still to common (especially in the side streets) one sees youngsters driving around without helmet protection. Motorcycle taxis seem to be allowed to carry passengers without requiring them to wear an helmet.
Especially in view of the rapidly declining birth rates in Thailand, the thousands of people killed yearly in motorcycle accidents will be surely missed in the future.

What do the signs say in the second picture?

The sign on the left is from the Emergency Room nurses. It is promoting a new phone number people can dial to get a free ambulance for emergencies.  The one in the middle was made by our students. It says, "Look good. Look smart. Wear a helmet."
