In my younger immortal years, I used to do lots of off-road biking.  We didnt have nice places like this to spend the day with.  Where I went was heavily wooded obstacle courses.  But now, in the dawn of my winter, I'm thinking this looks like so much fun!  Old unused rail lines are converted to walking/hiking/biking/horseback riding trails.  We have several in our area here in Jacksonville and a friend of mine is going to do one of these for the first time today.  I will get a full report by tomorrow and post if she thought it was fun or not.  I dont see how it cant be, except maybe in the summer when the yellow flies and mosquitoes are amassing armies.

Cheesy Rails to trails is a great idea. There's nothing like this where I live. Sad

Where I live the rails are still active so they might have some sort of "Stand by Me" moment. Ecks!

I used to ride quite a bit, on- and off-road, but while doing a training ride early one morning, I was hit by a Caddilac that ran a stop sign.  I cant get the nerve up to ride anymore.

But I might give this a shot since its an abandoned rail line and there are no cars.  Of course, my bike has been gone for a long time and I only have a beach cruiser now.  But for a leisurely ride, my cruiser would be fine, I think.  I'll have to check the tire tread.

Hmm.. my choice of words was wrong. Not that I live close to tracks that are on the "wrong side of town" but that they are so busy, you wouldn't want to walk on them, because it wouldn't be safe, you might get hurt, and then somebody else would have a "Stand by Me" moment.

My knee won't let me bike. My uncle has a recumbent bike that he likes, but I can't imagine reclining like that.

Did you friend like the trail, T?

I recommend this for areas with lots of mosquitos:

A little goes a long way, and lasts all day. You can find it in the camping section at Walmart year round.
