Stanford University created a way to join computers from all over the world to help find cures for diseases. It's called Folding@Home and you can help! Simply install a small application on your pc or mac and let it run in the background while you surf, work, or sleep. The longer your computer is on the more computations it can do and the more you help! Don't worry, it's spyware, adware, and malware safe.

Many websites have created Folding Teams so Isara has created a team as well. If you want to help then please install the software and join the Isara Folding@Home Team!

Download Software: http://www.stanford.edu/g...oup/folding/download.html
The first "Download" link on the list (5.03) should work for most PC users. It's graphic based (shows you the molecules) but there's also a basic version (text only) which uses less system resources. You can have multiple computers helping (install the software on each pc and use the same Username and Team Number for each).

In "Configure" input the following information.
User Name: (Anything you want)
Team Number: 53762

If you don't want your individual stats to be shown then please use the Username: Isara . PC users might need to right click the "red molecule" icon in the task bar and chose "Configure" to enter a username and Team Number. If you don't like viewing the animated molecules you can close the window. The application will still run in the background.

Folding@Home Website: http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/
Help and FAQ: http://www.stanford.edu/g...degroup/folding/mail.html

If you have any questions please post them here. Thanks for wanting to help out!

Well, I know it's downloaded..and after typing a bunch of thingies I think its doing something...

Isn't Stanford the school that also searches for UFOs?? I think I've seen some program before that uses a bunch of computers from around the world to sort out satellite information. I can't remember where I saw it...

Thanks a lot! It might take two or three days before your first "Work Unit" is complete, so give it some time. Our stats will jump real soon because our team just went from only 2 members to about 6. That's a pretty good increase in just one day.

Oh, Don't forget to recruit friends and family too! Grin

I finally got around to doing this. It was much easier than I thought. I have it running on 4 computers, each as a different user:

ZeroG-Laptop
ZeroG-eMachine
ZeroG-HP
ZeroG-Arcatum

I have the Windows machines running the text-only no-nonsense console version, and selected to have it automatically startup when the computer starts (as a service). ZeroG-Arcatum is my web server in Montreal running Linux. Since I started them all about the same time, it will be interesting to see which one is the fastest.

SETI@Home is one "looking for UFOs". That was the first massively distributed computation engine. I like the protein folding because it can really help people.

On the web server, I am able to look at the priority of the folding@home process, and it is the lowest priority, as it should be. Also, I see no apparent decrease in the performance of the web server.

Wow! Now we're up 10 CPUs. That's going to help a lot!

ZeroG will have the most points in no time at all. Speaking of points, maybe ZeroG can explain how the point system works. My brain hurts each time I try to figure it out.

Huh

Ah..Berkley not Stanford. Smiley Folding proteins way better cause than ufo's. After all, I already know aliens exist. I usually call them my relatives though Wink

Thanks ZeroG. Smiley Now I'm curious, is there a reason you used a different login name other than Isara? Is there any benefit to signing in as Isara? Hmm.. Huh

Ginafish - The username can be anything you want it to be. Each computer that has the Folding@Hoe application needs a different username. The Team Number is the only part that needs to be the same for everyone and every computer.

Once your first Work Unit is complete (usually takes 2-3 days) your stats should appear in the Team Stats page. If it doesn't then something hasn't been configured right.

You can see PK already has two team members (Isara and PK_Gillock) which have been folding for a while now. My 4 machines will show up in a few days when they finish their first Work Unit. As will Stasven's PS3, Ginafish's and tharley's. If you entered the username as Isara, then your work units will fold Grin into the Isara user stats on our team page. They all go to help out our team score, which helps promote Isara.org.

The points system rewards more points for faster machines. They figure out how long a work unit should take on a benchmark machine (days_per_workunit). You get 110 points for each days_per_work unit when your machine completes a work unit. If your blazing fast computer finishes the Work Unit in less time then the benchmark time, then you still get all the points for that work unit, but you can do more work units, so you get more points over time.

ZeroG - Standford needs to use your points explanation on their website. I actually understood yours. Grin

Everybody who has joined might need to check that they don't have "Isara" as their username. Your points still goto the overall team score but you won't be able to see your individual stats. If that's not important then just leave it at Isara.

Can't wait! Our team ranking should be much higher in a few days.

I'll start updating the first post of this topic so everyone can see how our stats are going and how we rank with the other teams/websites.

Work Units: 21
Points: 4,698
Ranking 11,710

I just had a horrifying thought. What if the results of one of our folding runs results in a drug which is tested on small animals.

Need I remind everyone what happened last time...

My PS3 says:

Name: ISARA
Team: 53762
Completed: 5 Work Units

I've had it running whenever I'm not using it, so like 20-22 hours a day.

Stasven,

I think your PS3 will outperform every Windows or Linux box out there. The GPU (graphics processing unit) on that box is the fastest processor out there. If you look at the statistics on the site, you will see the compute power from PS3s out does all other hardware configurations.

If you look at the stats on the site, you will see that comparing windows machines with PS3, there are 5 times as many Windows machines, but PS3s constitute 3 times as many TFLOPS.

I started to look more into their FLOPS estimate. The performance of their RSX chip opened my eyes to what could be viable platform for Seismic processing at my company. So I found this page.

I started drooling when I saw this screen shot from the PS3...

Dude! Have you seen the realtime display of the folding?

...time passes...ZeroG looks further into the PS3...

OMG, you can install Linux on it!

After reading all that about the PS3, I will need at least 20 Windows/Linux boxes to keep up with Stasven's PS3. Play more games, so I can catch up!  Cheesy

You'll have atleast my Dual-Core Machine and my laptop by the end of the day. Hopefully, if I can load linux on another PC you'll have it too.

That would be great, Hunter! Grin

FYI A dual core can have two installations on it running at the same time. You might want to check the F@H website for more information so you can take advantage of a dual core system.

Well, I started my laptop over. I had the console running but it didn't use the team number. Sad Going with the GUI for better control.

Stasven,

I really need to know, can you see a 3d rendering of the actual protein folding on your PS3?

I just found out yesterday, that our research center in Japan is looking into PS3s for their super computing potential. They were requesting that our in-house Source Code Management System work on it.

Huh, who'd a thunk the lowly Playstation would one day become a super computer. I know there are linux distros for PS3 with GUI's. Tell me how that works out for ya, ZeroG. It's very interesting.

Btw, I used the user name Isara. I don't really care about my individual stats or how slow or fast my puter is working.

I am impressed with how much the ps3 is doing. Smiley

I think it's cool to see so many computers helping Isara fold. It's great to work together for a good cause! Grin
